No advert for a diet product is complete without a bright-eyed, nubile slimmer grinning alongside an unflatteringly rotund “before” picture. GlaxoSmithKline bosses didn’t need to look further than the boardroom to find the poster boy for their latest product, America’s first clinically proven over-the-counter diet pill.
Executive Steven Burton is heading the campaign to promote the drug, called Alli, after he lost a significant amount of weight by taking it. He slimmed down from 275 pounds to 215 over three years, and is now evangelical about the benefits. Alli, already available on prescription in a slightly different from under the name Xenical in both the US and the UK, now awaits regulatory approval and could be available on pharmacy shelves in the United States by the end of the summer. TEACHER Donald Hunt sexually abused a 14-year-old pupil and received a nine-month sentence (News & Star, July 29). This is ridiculous. What does nine months mean? He will be out in about five months! They should be locked up and the keys thrown away. It’s the parents and the children who suffer for all this and it makes our courts an absolute laughing stock. Bob Wilson Kings Arms Whitehaven n I think the sentence for Donald Hunt is a disgrace. The man should have been put away for a couple of years at least. Elizabeth Foley Cleator Moor n I think it is appalling that Donald Hunt only got a nine- month jail sentence. Mary Watters Seascale football programme Do you have one? I WONDER if anyone can help me. I am trying to track down a football programme for my collection – it is for the 4th Division game Carlisle United v Peterborough United played on August 27, 1960. For the past three years, we have participated in the JDRF Walk. We have formed a team named Ezra’s Eagles and have raised money towards this cause. Three days before he started kindergarten, Ezra was diagnosed with Type 1 (Juvenile) Diabetes, — he is insulin-dependent. This diagnosis was a tremendous shock to our family since we found no record of diabetes in our family in the last three generations. I cried for three weeks straight as my husband Larry and I fumbled through our new daily routine, diabetes management. It was heart wrenching to watch Ezra’s bewilderment of this new life style. He kept asking why he needed to get another shot, when he just had one earlier in the day! Those first few months were really tough for us, but eventually I left my pity party behind and started thanking God for all of the blessings in our lives and the good things to come. For that, and despite the resistance one might put up to the slightly simplistic world view and the trite would-be “words of wisdom” dropped here and there, A Stone Carver does come to win you over with its straightforward little pleasures, and it might even make you think a bit about the thorny topic of eminent domain even if that’s not the real story and even if you already think your opinion on the subject is as firm as Malatesta’s — and with the issue coming up often in these parts lately, being forced to allow nuance into your views is no bad thing. Police were continuing to search for a Rehoboth Beach man who helped rob a Bethany Beach liquor store between June 28-29. The Rehoboth suspect goes by the street name of “Circus,” police said.
Matthew Connor, 44, of Bethany Beach was arrested July 3 and charged with four counts of burglary, two counts of conspiracy, two counts of criminal mischief and two counts of theft in the burglary at Connor’s Package Store on Route 26 in Bethany. Police say he and the other man entered by climbing in through the ceiling of an adjacent store. The two took an undisclosed amount of cash and liquor, police said. Connor was being held at the Sussex Correctional Institution in Georgetown on $15,000 secured bail.
Anyone with information about the second suspect’s whereabouts is asked to call 539-1000 or (800) TIP-3333. (To continue this article, please go to http://www.delmarvanow.com/deweybeach/stories/20060712/2306774.html)

Current evidence suggests that suffering from back pain can actually shrink your brain. This is worrying because back pain is a common health problem worldwide. Back pain affects up to two-thirds of the adult population annually, which alone causes huge losses due to days off from work and school. Managing back pain is more important than ever, not only because of its economic costs, but also because of the newly discovered negative effect it has on the brain.
The good news is that back pain research has shown that simple methods can be very effective in reducing back pain. Recent findings have established that acupressure, an ancient Chinese healing technique, is more effective than standard physical therapies in relieving back pain.
Acupressure uses the same points as acupuncture, but instead of needles, acupressure uses only the fingertips. (To continue this article, please go to http://www.newstarget.com/019623.html)

A. Heart or cardiovascular disease is a cluster of conditions, including strokes, that affect the heart and blood vessels that supply it.
Q. What causes it in women?
A. High blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol are typical causes of heart disease. Other factors that increase a woman’s risk include smoking, obesity, oral contraceptive use after age 35 and an endocrine disorder known as polycystic ovary syndrome.
Q. How much does a family history contribute to heart disease?
A. A heart attack in a sibling raises a person’s risk three to four times; one in a mother or father, one and a half times. Of greatest concern is if a father or brother had heart disease before age 55, or a mother or sister before age 65.

“To sit with a dog on a hillside on a glorious afternoon is to be back in Eden, where doing nothing was not boring - it was peace”, wrote Milan Kundera in one of his novels. However, to sit alongside your dog on a sand dune is proving to be a bit of a challenge. Dogs are neither allowed in public parks nor open green areas maintained by the Dubai Municipality. The same rules apply to public beaches.
As pointed out in the readers’ letters few weeks ago, many family pets in Dubai are massively overweight. Overweight animals run all the same health risks as their heavyweight human owners. Lameness, heart and lung problems, and diabetes are all very real concerns. The problem of obesity can be, as in humans, attributed to two essential components - inappropriate diet and, especially, lack of exercise. When I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes four years ago, I immediately adopted a new diet, carefully following Canadian Diabetes Association guidelines. But despite sticking to the regimen, my blood sugar was still off the charts. I feared blindness, a stroke. Or perhaps the loss of a leg.
Then I heard about Richard Bernstein. The endocrinologist is often described as a “maverick” for his diabetes treatments.
Flying in the face of guidelines set by the American Diabetes Association (and, by extension, the Canadian Diabetes Association), the 72-year-old advocates a radical decrease in blood-sugar levels through major carb-cutting. So major in fact, that one could say Dr. Bernstein “out-Atkins” Atkins, recommending a sustained ultralow-carb diet, rather than easing diabetics off and back onto their bread baskets.
